Twist right. - He believes BlackBridge to be responsible for his father’s murder and brother’s disappearance. They can outmanoeuvre anyone, as the long trail of bodies behind them can confirm. But they haven’t yet met Colter Shaw.
Don’t slip up. - This time the stakes are huge – the fate of a nation is in Colter’s hands. He must find the solution as to why his father died – but to do that he needs to stay alive…
Review
Colter is getting closer to the truth, well let's say he is getting a wee bit closer to finding the solution to the puzzle in the middle of a riddle and wrapped up in a code. Yeh, his Dad does not make this easy for him at all.
In fact at times it all seems to be a bit like the ramblings and paranoia of a man who was deeply invested in his conspiracy theories, and had perhaps lost sight of reality, but then pieces of the obscure puzzle start slotting into place and of course BlackBridge act as if they have plenty to hide. Targeting Shaw suggests they are after something important enough to kill for.
Deaver weaves the threads of Colter's childhood through the plot, and in doing so to a fruitful conclusion. His relationship to his brother and the way he feels indebted and almost indoctrinated to conclude the mission his father started. Is it love for the paternal figure, despite how extreme the man was or guilt because he feels he failed him as a son? It's a difficult dynamic, which becomes more complicated when a ghost from the past reenters his life.
Although this is the third in the Colter Shaw series I was really fascinated by the way this one reads, as opposed to the previous one, The Goodbye Man is a strange parallel to the childhood experience, he frees others and in doing so frees a part of himself. This one has more of covert, conspiracy and espionage vibe to it. So far Deaver is always good for a cracking read.
