#Blogtour The Shareg by A. G. Rivett

It's a pleasure to take part in the Blogtour The Shareg by A.G. Rivett. This is the third part of The Isle of Fincara Trilogy, published by Pantolwen Press: Publication Day 16 October 2026. Tour courtesy of Zooloo's Book Tours.

About the Author

Ceredigion author A G Rivett claims to have lived several lives in the course of his one life. Born in London, raised in the Home Counties, he has been a doctor, a priest, and a crofter in the Scottish Highlands.

He has lived in rural Northern Nigeria and knows what a simpler life looks like, less dependent on technology. He now lives in West Wales with his wife, Gillian Paschkes-Bell, who works with him as a writing team. There, he grows fruit and vegetables and has sewn a wildflower meadow. He has three daughters and two grandsons. Connect with the author via agrivett.com

About the book

A world like eleventh-century Britain; an island like the Western Isles. Caerpadraig is the only town with a woman for their priest. And there lives time-traveller, John Finlay, whom the Islanders call Dhion.

The town’s headman—the shareg—feels his age and must stand down. The contest to replace him is intense and even the foreigner, Dhion, is drawn in. Meanwhile, the Archpriest’s men are on the move, emissaries of a missionary push to replace longstanding Island traditions. As the new shareg is chosen, two of them appear, the first signs of the conflict that will change everything.

Bookended by a body washed up on a beach and a glass of whisky on the Inverness train, the world of Caerpadraig comes alive with characters who dance to a different drum.

Review

Without going into the details of the ending, I think it is what one would call a full circle moment. In a sense it puts forward the thought of purpose. Do we have - and I do think we do - a purpose to fulfill in our time. Not always one of great moments in history, because the majority of us come and go without great impact on the world. The prefice rather being that every person creates a set of connections and leaves an impact, regardless of whether negative or positive, and these ripples of connections are important in ways most people never comprehend.

Such is the story of Dhion, which begs the question - in this speculative tale - that perhaps his appearance was always meant to be. Was always his destiny, and he was always supposed to create ripples and share knowledge, and in doing so moving civilisation forward and leaving a mark upon the people around him.

It's a poetic and spritual ending to the trilogy. Taking each book, pathway and crossroads into consideration. From the new beginning, the birth of Dhion and his story culminating in a set of circumstances that protect his new people and family. Saving those who saved him. His purpose.

I think, after reading all three books, that they are the kind of reads that let you reflect on the depth in retrospect. Beyond the details of the surface information.

#Blogtour The Priest's Wife by A. G. Rivett

It's a pleasure to take part in the Blogtour The Priest's Wife by A.G. Rivett. This is the second part of The Isle of Fincara Trilogy, published by Pantolwen Press: Publication Day 19 October 2023.

When her husband the priest dies, Morag loses more than her life partner. With him goes her home and her place in the community. When her identity is also called into question, she sets out on a quest to find herself anew.

Meanwhile, the new priest brings with him a religion that seeks to sweep away the mix of Celtic myth and Christian story that has sustained the islanders for many years.

In the conflict that unfolds, each is challenged to know themselves more deeply, and at last to recognise the new roles that await them.

Review

Bringing it back to the basics of structure, the death of Hugo reveals the instability of Morag's life. Everything is built upon the premise of her position as his companion and partner, and when he no longer exists neither does her position. It's a bit of a blow to her heart and soul. Not only has she lost the man she loved, she is suddenly relegated to a position of non-importance. She loses her role, her standing and her home. In a way she also loses her community.

For an outsider looking in it looks like the ultimate betrayal, but it is merely one of the many inconviences of being a woman in a world run by men. Or at the very least a world run by lineage and born from societal structures.

The grief, the rejection, the replacement and the displacement, all serve as inner and outer drivers to push Morag on a path to discover her identity. Who is she and where does stem from, what is her maternal lineage? The discoveries she makes eventually lead her on an eye-opener of journey. One whihc may or may not lead her back to the fold of friends and her family.

Whilst the journey to find self is still a core element in the second book in the Isle of Fincara trilogy, this time it is defined by the way women are perceived in roles of influence and authority. We delve further into Celtic myth and the advancement of a patriarchal religious system, which strides without losing pace towards societies who prior to this were determined and ruled by a more earth based set of rules interwoven with folklore and mythology.

#Blogtour Sister Olive Wouldn't Hurt a Fly by Gill Calvin Thomas

It's a pleasure to take part in the Blogtour Sister Olive Wouldn't Hurt a Fly by Gill Calvin Thomas.

About the Author

Gill Calvin Thomas has retired from academic life and lives with her husband in Swanage, Dorset. She finds inspiration while walking in the Isle of Purbeck. Here, she is able to escape into a world of her own making, getting to know her characters, whilst she plans the next twist and turn of the plot.

As writing has become a major part of Gill’s life, she has withdrawn from taking a leading role in many community volunteer activities, although she has retained her interest in local and national politics. A lifelong feminist, Gill likes nothing better than a spirited debate on the issues of the day with family and friends. As her writing career develops, she hopes to explore those issues in her stories. Visit gillthomas.co.uk

About the book

If this whole saga was a fight between good and evil, then who had won? As far as Miriam could work out, neither good nor evil had triumphed yet. Now she was having to confront the grim consequences of Will’s behaviour, and she was mortally afraid. Maybe he and his darkness would win after all.

The tragic suicide of a young student starts a shocking chain of events for William Marshall, his wife Miriam and their son, Ollie. As Will descends into madness, a ghostly presence appears in their old house to protect Ollie. However, when two strangers threaten Miriam and an attempt is made to snatch Ollie, mother and son are forced to flee.

Amidst ever-present danger, they shake off pursuers to seek sanctuary in Rock House in Dorset, where they meet Caitlin and her friends. Twenty years have passed since Charlie Bond helped Caitlin solve the mystery of her mother’s death. Now, it is the turn of Charlie’s sidekick, Sam Haskell, to investigate a mysterious cult and unmask a killer.

Review

I think it's fair to say that Miriam doesn't quite grasp the seriousness of the situation at first. Doesn't really comprehend how severe the differences are between her and Will. The damage his obsession with his new friends has done to their relationship and their family. That he has become a danger to them, especially to his young son.

Ollie feels as if he is being watched over by good forces, perhaps because evil is trying to gain a foothold in his life. He can feel the darkness creeping towards him, and yet simultaneously also the good trying to keep him safe.

What they are both unaware of is the fact Will is in over his head and other people have their own agenda, which may put him in danger and probably not because he is a dangerous pseudo leader of a cult.

The story could do with a once over with an eye on clarity, plot threads and better dialogue. Aside from that it's a story that has potential for more in the series. It would be better if the core aspect becomes more centric to the tale, and also deciding which thread is going to take centre stage. Is it Will, is it Olive or is it evil?

#Blogtour Reawakening by Alethea Lyons

It's my turn on the Blogtour Reawakening by Alethea Lyons, a collection of short stories in The Seer of York universe.

About the Author

Alethea (she/ze) writes various forms of SFF, with a particular love for science-fantasy, dark fantasy, dystopias, and folklore. Many of her works take place at the intersection between technology and magic. She enjoys writing stories with subtle political and philosophical messages, but primarily wants her stories to be great tales with characters readers will love. She also has soft spots for found family, hopeless romances, and non-human characters. Her short stories can be found in a variety of publications and links for these are on her website.

Alethea lives in Manchester, UK with her husband, little Sprite, a cacophony of stringed instruments, and more tea than she can drink in a lifetime.

Bonus content for The Hiding & other works can be found on her website: alethealyons.wixsite.com/stories/seerofyork, Social media: linktr.ee/alethearlyons

About the book

Return to the world of The Seer of York with this collection of new tales set in the aftermath of The Hiding.

Introducing Zero, a starlight cat with a bleak and painful past.

Demonic-possession, Faery circles, PÅ«cas, And more…

Review

Although the beginning and intro sets up the world of The Seer of York universe, the intro and stories have a different feeling. Whereas the intro to the supernatural, dark and demonic element of York has a more ancient almost medieval feel to it, the stories have a present day vibe. In a way it sets the two worlds apart, despite their commonalities.

It's a short collection, novella length. Each of the stories opens the door to both a new adventure and front seat to the machinations of the power that is hidden in plain sight and the merry band of monster hunters who are intent on keeping them at bay.

Might be an interesting idea for a small screen series, nobody has quite managed to fill the Buffy sphere since that waved goodbye, but perhaps that isn't doing the individual stories real justice. They vary in depth, in walks through folklore, myths and legends. Ghoulish, grim, disturbing and balancing the scales are the monster hunters.

I like to see some of the shorts developed with more depth - possible ideas for the next book in the series perhaps, although I'm sure there are plenty more where these came from. It's definitely world-building with a lot of potential - looking forward to seeing where the author takes it.

#Blogtour The Journey Home by Conrad Jones

It's my turn on the Blogtour The Journey Home by Conrad Jones.

About the Author

Conrad Jones spent 12 years working for the biggest quick service restaurant brand in the world.

On March 20th 1993 the IRA terrorist organization bombed the shopping center outside the restaurant he was managing that day. The experience fueled an interest in the root causes of extremist terrorists and the reasoning why its perpetrators feel justified in taking innocent lives. That incident sparked the story of 'Soft Target'. Follow @ConradJones on Twitter, Visit conradjones.org

About the book

The saga continues with Kalu in grave danger in London, while his son Beb flies into rebel-controlled Chad with his wife and baby. They're trying to cross the border into Nigeria to find his long-lost sisters in Monguno. This story will drag you along at 100mph as each perilous journey unfolds and the horror of each situation is exposed. Is this family cursed or can they find each other and a peaceful existence?

Review

This is the third part of a family saga, which can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the previous books to experience the entirety of their story. Given how the family is ripped apart and the danger they face, especially the women and girls of the family, it will give the reader a wider context.

Although it's important to remember that fiction can be used to bring important points home with more intensity - it's far more important to acknowledge the reality of what is described and experienced in the story when it comes to Boko.

Under the guise of misrepresented religion, fanatics or rather criminals use their interpretation of religion to justify the heinous crimes they commit. The crimes against women and children are especially horrifying, and perhaps more so because they have been committing them for many years without any agency being able to bring a stop to their reign of terror. The statistics in regards to the kidnapping,  rape, forced marriages and forced births of girls and women are just a drop in the barrel in regards to the reality of the numbers. That includes the innocent victims they have murdered during their crime waves.

This is the end of journey, a homecoming for the family. A reintroduction to the children they once were and the adults they now are - adults laden with trauma and hesitant to trust their surroundings and the people around them.

It's a story that moves within a world of urban crime, politixal minefields and the exploitative nature of global crime against women and children.
