#PublicationDayPush The Marquess Next Door by Virginia Heath

It's the Publication Day Push for The Marquess Next Door by Virginia Heath.

About the Author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

About the book

A dashing new neighbour… Temptation on her doorstep!  To avoid an unwanted suitor at a ball, Hope Brookes asks another gentleman to rescue her. He obliges – with a surprisingly passionate kiss!

Revealed as her sinfully handsome new neighbour, Lucius, Marquess of Thundersley, they forge a friendship over their balconies. It’s refreshing that Lucius is more interested in her writer dreams than her looks, so why can’t she stop thinking about that kiss?

Review

There aren't enough sinfully handsome neighbours, who are genuinely invested in romance, raising heartbeats, and awakening passions. Luckily for Hope she has one willing to save her from suitors she would avoid.

The distraction - a passionate kiss - is an unexpected catalyst for a chemical reaction, also known as omg the two have the hots for each other. An undeniable attraction neither of them can deny. The two forge an invigorating friendship, which helps to destroy the walls Hope has built up around her.

I'd say it's exactly the right time to ride the new wave of love for historical romance, especially Regency romance, following the success of Bridgerton. I embrace the new wave, because it is the perfect escapism in such dire times and it's a sub-genre that has disappeared a little over the last few decades.

Having read quite a few of Heath's books, she definitely has a flair for the passion, love and turmoil that readers love when it comes to a romance read. This is no different. It is entertaining and gives readers just the right level of cat and mouse, and more importantly the titillating romance.

Review
If you've read Virginia Heath before then you might recognise characters in this book, who are featured in other books in the series. Those characters are given a brand new lease on life and presented from a different perspective, as they embark on a journey together.

I like the way Heath throws in important topics of the times to give the read a more serious tone. It gives the characters more depth and any resulting emotions a more realistic feel.

Penny is a woman burdened by the weight of the crimes of her husband. His actions have left her in an impossible situation. Her and their very young son. On top of that she is a woman damaged by the brutality of said husband and the oppressive life she was forced to lead with him.

It's a heartfelt romance with the vibe of an 80s romance and the serious tone of a modern read. It has a slightly darker side to it, which I found commendable given the topic. Usually the reality of violent relationships are glossed over or used for dramatic moments in the romance genre or worse. I'm not a fan of writing rape in a way that romanticises it. Instead Heath gives the victim a voice and let's her navigate her way back to a healthy relationship. The other side of that is Hadleigh trying to understand and be sensitive to what she wants.

It's a lovely and sensitive read at times. The scenes between Hadleigh and the little boy are incredibly cute. Those heartstrings might get a tug or two. Heath certainly knows how to spin a lovely romantic read and give it a sensitive undertone at the same time.

About the book
A spy on a mission…Until he meets this heiress!
Miss Theodora Cranford’s learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won’t be deceived by another man who can’t see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort – not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she’s sure there’s more to him than meets the eye… But after that first captivating kiss, she's certainly left wanting more!

Review
I think we all know who the real star of this book is, the disgraceful and unapologetic Trefor. He sets the tone for the light-hearted and amusing vibe of the story. The main characters and the furry ball of slipper-napping trouble all have a sense of mischief about them, which garners the occasional grin and laugh.

The disgraced Lord Gray is actually on a mission to find a ruthless smuggler and has narrowed the suspects down to two people living in a specific rural area.  During his assignment he gets distracted by a fiery haired heiress, who pretends to be prim and proper, but has the heart of a thrill-seeking wench.

Two souls collide when they meet, except for Gray Thea is a no-go because of the mission he is on, and he has a dubious past, which means she should stay away from him. The two embark upon a seductive and playful game of tethered desire. Going a step further each time and crossing small boundaries, as they play with fire.

I would actually recommend this to a reader, who perhaps isn't inclined to pick up a frock-twister, bodice-ripper, highland romp or sweet romance. It's a lovely way to introduce new readers to the genre, possibly because Heath pulls off the love, seduction and lust without taking herself or the characters too seriously.

They feel real and the reader can be invested in their lives, but they can laugh at them in equal measures. Not a feat everyone can pull off, because a lot of romances become too bogged down in devastating plot-lines, cliffhangers or over-the-top scenes.

It's romance with a fun and humorous vibe. A light-hearted read for the moments when the heart needs pleasure instead of worry, fright or pain.
