Review
This is the third and final book in the Silent Sea Chronicles series. I recommend reading the other two books in the series to get the full background of the characters and the storyline.

In the first book the search is on for the new sentinel. In the second book the new sentinel has to prove their worth and establish themselves, which isn't an easy thing to do, because the Elders like everything to stay the same. In this third book the users of magic have to trust they are making the right choice for their people. Hate seems to be everywhere and fear of magick threatens their lives once more.

It's ironic that after all of the trials, deaths and tribulations Tei and her people have been through, they still aren't safe. After bringing the hatred in Kalaya to a halt they now find they have become a target for the Stone Haven people. Their hatred, mistrust and fear of magick, makes them an even bigger threat to magick users.

Rogerson puts a focus on the relationships, especially the romantic ones and bonds of friendship. The problems Callisa and Tei have to deal with, whilst the adventure and battles continue all around them. Tei is finally able to allow her true feelings to flourish and Callisa realises it is quite lonely at the top.

At the heart of the series is a group of people who are trying to survive the oppression and annihilation of their people. Magick is considered dangerous and not trustworthy. The only thing the Sentinel and her people want is to live in peace and safety. The question is whether it is possible.

It's fantasy with a compelling plot and intriguing characters. Rogerson threads an undercurrent of romance throughout the fantasy, which then invites readers of other genres in for a read.

About the book

Review
I would recommend reading the first in the Silent Sea Chronicles. You can read this as a standalone, but the first adds so much context to the read that I would read them in order. Just a suggestion.

In this book, as opposed to the first one that consists of the search for the Sentinel, things are beginning to change because of her. What's interesting is the fact her time alone, fighting to stay hidden, has helped her develop into the strong person she is now.

There is no reverence to the Elders or to Tei for that matter. Callisa is so used to making her own decisions based on what she believes to be the best way to protect everyone and move forward. The question is whether it actually is the best thing for Turrak and the magical community. Is Callisa putting everyone in danger? Are the Elders going to intervene in some way?

Speaking of the Elders, they have what I think is safe to call a minor Handmaids Tale moment. They call all the unattached women together to remind them of their duty. It's time for them to connect with the single male members and procreate, thereby ensuring the survival of the community. I mean, really?

Of course Tei falls into this category, which infuriates her and makes her think about the man she loves even more. Brogan, the man outside of the magical community, and yet part of him belongs there. He is trying his best to battle the people inciting the hatred and discrimination towards those with magic. It's an honourable task, but is it a futile one?

This is the second part of an intriguing high fantasy series with a compelling premise and characters. Rogerson delivers a solid read, which isn't always easy when it comes to the genre. I am enjoying the read so far and look forward to the third book in the series, the Sentinel's Alliance.

About the book
The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel.

The Assembly controls Kalaya. Originally set up to govern, they now persecute those with magic and exile them to the Turrak Mountains.

Tei, a tailor’s daughter, has always hidden her magic but when her father's old friend visits and warns them to flee to the mountains she must leave her old life behind. On the journey, an attack leaves her father mortally wounded. He entrusts her into the care of the exiles and on his deathbed makes a shocking confession.

Struggling with self doubt, Tei joins the exiles search for the new Sentinel who is the only person capable of restoring the fading magic. But mysterious Masked Riders are hunting the Sentinel too, and time, as well as hope, is running out.

Against mounting odds it will take friendship, heartache and sacrifice for the exiles to succeed in their quest, but is Tei willing to risk everything to save the island magic?

Review
Tei's world is turned upside down when her father decides life in Kalaya has become too dangerous for them, because of the magick they both carry within them. As yet Tei is unaware just what exactly her talents entail, and she isn't prepared for the expectations her new world will lay upon her.

Her father reveals a devastating secret on his deathbed, which may make other people rethink her loyalty, but it just makes Tei more determined to protect the legacy of their father and daughter relationship.

What connects the worlds or rather Kalaya, Turrak and the island, is the core essence of magick and people who have certain abilities. Also the fear of magick and the oppression of those who carry it within them. Above that connection is the search for the Sentinel, a person who can keep Turrak save. The result is a compelling and driven story.

High fantasy is quite a difficult genre to hit the right note on. There has to be an equal balance between relationships, world-building, depth of characters, action and the elements of magick or those that go beyond the parameters of what is considered to be the norm. As soon as a romance takes centre stage and slides into a feel good scenario or raunchy eroticism it tips the scales. When the action or battle scenes consume the entirety of the read it tips the scales. Those scales have to stay balanced, because that is the cement of high fantasy world-building.

Does Rogerson do that? I'm happy to say she does.

It's high fantasy with solid world-building and an interesting set of characters. I look forward to reading the sequel to this series, The Sentinel's Reign.
