Newly single Camille Robins luck is about to change as she embarks on a new chapter of her life, moving to the city near her best friend, Lizzie.
A chance meeting at Lou’s B&B, Camille meets George, a handsome man who sweeps her off her feet. Can Lizzie forgive Camille for stealing her previous boyfriend, or will she seek revenge? Camille can’t believe her luck! George can’t believe how perfect she is.... Was it a fate romance, or part of an evil plan?
Camille has taken a brave step towards a happier and safer life away from the clutches of an abusive partner. One could say it makes her a prime target for something or someone nefarious, because she is vulnerable, but then she meets lovely George.
The story is written from Camille's point of view and interspersed throughout are short chapters by George and Lizzie. These short chapters are a bit like intervals from the rosy positive narrative by Camille - flash fiction moments of bitter reality. Both George and Lizzie give readers a frank look at the way they really feel, and it's not pretty.
Camille doesn't appear to acknowledge or perceive the real feelings and mind-set of either one of them. In her mind Lizzie is the protective sister and George is the caring new friend. Unfortunately the truth is a little less optimistic.
It has a nice little wicked aftertaste at the end. Durston definitely has a feel for crime and a for creating a compelling psychological thriller - the writing needs a bit of a polish and more fluidity, but it is an interesting and promising debut novel.
