Review

It should come as no surprise that the exploitation of women is a highly profitable business in any era or place in history, and this story features said exploitation in the Victorian era. Perhaps not as visible due to a clear separation between money, class and status, never the twain shall meet unless someone wants to profit from the exploitation.

Ambrose Parry (husband and wife writig duo) have created a popular historical crime fiction series that has left its mark. The combination of social constrictions and expectations, with complex ever evolving characters, whilst battling the scandals and crimes in the Victorian era.

Raven is tasked with, or rather tasks himself, with solving the death of someone close to him. The relevations lead him on a dangerous path, one he can't really afford to be on because his marriage is already fragile. Meanwhile Fisher is drawn into a despicable quagmire of exploitation and despair. Eyes wide shut, as they say.

I recommend reading the historical note the author/s added. It really gives the story that added layer of depth and comprehension, even the title they picked. It also gives the reader a certain element of comparison - the beginning and roots of both media and technology in crime and exploitation of the vulnerable and the powerful, then look at the sevenheaded hydra of corruption it has become.

I have to say the ending was unexpected, and yet also the right way to go from a developent perspective. It opens the doors to Fisher and Raven, it might not fall into place, but it brings them out of the tightly knitted corner they were wedged into.

It's always an enjoyable read and experience, may there be many more.

Unsurprisingly Kari is driven, albeit often subconsciously, by her grief and the disappearance of her young son. It does a multitude of things, it interferes with her physical health, her decision-making and her instincts. All the aforementioned can be positive and/or negative. It can and does make the people around her doubt her instincts, training and professional experience.

When a teenage boy is suspected of a brutal murder his confession rings alarm bells for Kari. She feels as if the police have not asked the right questions and are too eager to accept the perfect solution for the hideous crime. Kari expands the net of suspects, timelines and possible motives, which puts her in direct opposition to the police and the traumatised families.

It's an intriguing well-paced read with the distinct flow of two different voices that weave a perfectly captivating story. It's not an easy feat to fit multiple creative voices into one space without one unintentionally sounding stronger than the other. This collaboration is smooth, respectful and memorable. It also leaves the reader not on a cliff-hanger per se, but rather takes us back to previous crossroads in the story, which results in a possible path to travel going forward. That means we will definitely be hearing from Kari Voss again.

Review

I really enjoyed the author within the book writing his own story plot - Peyton Collard becomes larger than life and at some points there appears to be some melding of people. 'Side-eyes Hamdy.' The story becomes an insightful introspective reflection of life, connections, choices and roads taken. Who better to tell it than a desperate man who is happy to take a life for the right reason, but who decides whether it was the right reason or indeed is there anything that warrants the punishment and finality of death?

Running alongside there is also the intriguing question of how much responsibility we as individuals carry for the greater scheme of things, such as pollution and climate change. Is the denial of individual culpability the easiest escape route for the majority of us? Does that stance become a way of life, a coping mechanism, and make us almost indifferent to the pain and suffering around us?

The bigger picture, at least for Peyton, is who decides whether he becomes the weapon to be wielded against others. Is it always power, money and influence that is the deciding factor? Is anyone really going to cry a tear if someone who deserves it, gets what is coming to them?

It's ironic that the subject matter of this core question is playing out in real time, as we watch the people defend an assassin, because the victim was a key player in a company at the core of suffering for many people.

Hamdy is an author to watch, and I highly recommend this read.

Review

I think Joanna Chylka doesn't really fit into the norm when it comes to being a lawyer or a sleuth. She adheres to the rule of laugh - sometimes. She isn't frightened to stand up to and stare down those who are in her way. She excels at the game of law and enjoys the sparring in equal measures.

This new case she has been drawn into is a bit of a conundrum. A missing child, a locked room/hose scenario and two parents who appear to have secrets to hide. Suspicion soon falls on the parents, which means Joanna has to try and defend them, and as she says quite eloquently - she doesn't need to know whether they are guilty or innocent. Not sure her colleague Kordian feels the same way though.

With that in mind - the apparent misbalance in attitude and approach towards the legal and criminal aspects of the case - makes the end of the story even more interesting. In fact it is enough to make you wonder how much of the professional persona is an act, because it is thrown out of the window when a choice between life or death has to be made.

I really enjoyed the more fractured, often stoic approach and the overall voice and style of this author. I would definitely recommend and read more.

In perhaps slight echoes of certain stories written by Christie, where people and their pasts are brought together to expose their secrets, in this case it is to solve the murder of Edward Luddenham, the story becomes a mystery hidden in a box full of puzzles. Each guest asked to present their own tale of murder, mayhem or mystery. Some of the stories certainly reveal a lot about the individual characters.

Each story becomes a crime scenario or a mystery to be solved by the narrator or the intent listeners. The question is where will the stories lead those looking for the answers about Luddenham. What is the point of them sharing at all? Unless of course the answer to the ultimate question is hidden in plain sight.

It's a wonderful mixture of old meets new. This homage to Christie invites readers to help solve puzzles in order to solve the crime. Such fun, and a great read - in fact it's the perfect festive gift for a fellow reader. I highly recommend it, there is something for everyone in it. Hopefully there will be more.

Review

With pseudonyms I think it is best to put any prior knowledge of the author behind the pseudonym and their work to the far back of your mind. The whole point is being able to approach writing and/or genres without being bogged down with the expectation of previous successes or failures. Seeing and experiencing them and their work like a tabula rasa. Saying that I'd completely forgotten this is Lars Kepler.

I enjoyed the way the setting stepped away from the easy grasp and availability of modern sleuthing and instead took the reader back to old school basics, a tinge of Christie and Doyle I think. An old mansion and playing the part with cocktails and the proper etiquette for dinner.

I must admit there isn't much clarity on how Julia arrives at a lot of her insights and often appears to be taking part in her own version of Tommy and Tuppence - the post-divorce era of course. I can imagine this being highly entertaining in a screen version.

Does the author step away from preconceived notions - absolutely. In fact let's see more from Ahndoril. Is this the first of many crime encounters and mysteries for the Stark Detective Agency? Will we find out more about what makes Julia and Sid tick, especially as an ex-couple and as a newly formed work team. I'm looking forward to finding out.

Review

The core of the story is a hot topic, a controversial one and one that causes great division. In a way the crime element shines a light on the lilt towards a dystopian and backward journey certain countries are currently on in regard to women and the healthcare they need and are entitled to.

The slide back into medieval patriarchal control of girls and women, which follows on with the consequence of a Gileadesque state of affairs. Women, girls will die at the hands of the ignorant, suffer at the hands of laws made based on falsities and misinformation. False and hypocritical people imposing their idea of righteousness on others. 

It is a travesty that the story, and indeed the author, takes inspiration from actual reality. In the 21st century no woman or girl should be made secondary - their life and their choice.

It's understandable the path Patricia takes. Why shouldn't the cruel, inhumane and upholders of intentionally harmful laws and consequences be punished for killing and causing the deaths of the innocents. Equally the storylines allow a glimpse at where logic goes to die and hypocrisy reigns supreme.

I really enjoyed the fact the author doesn't shy away from the reality, which we all need to fight to ensure future generations of women and girls are not burdened by the hypocrisy of the patriarchy.

Review

Might just be me, but I find some of the shorter Tempe books tend to pack more of a punch, especially when it comes to core issues incorporated into the story. Often ends up being an interesting learning experience, despite the gruesome murders along the way. I still occasionally whip out what I learnt about Burmese Pythons and the Everglades in one of said shorter books.

Tempe is drawn into a string of fire related deaths, the place and property seem to to play an important part in the solution. In a tense exquisitely detailed venture into forgotten crimes and the waves they often create far into the future, this crime takes a bite out of history to weave an unforgettable tale.

This one is also a testament to what a talented storyteller the author is - it ends with mixed feelings of nostalgia, helplessness and the realisation that sometimes there is no such thing as justice for the most heinous of crimes.

Still going strong after all these years, with no sign of the popularity of this fan favourite diminishing, the Tempe series is the gift that keeps on giving. Always an auto-buy author for me, because Reichs always delivers a great read.

Intel suggests someone is planning something big at the G7 summit in Edinburgh. The presence of certain high value targets in the same place as particular agent who is known for being in the midst of plots to destabilise countries, political spheres and just peace in general - it's a recipe for well-planned disaster. No wonder Emma ends up smack bang in the middle.

It's interesting how the relationship between Emma and Kate evolves - from initial irritation to an acknowledgement of similarities, and what could be deemed as recognition of the need to recruit. I wonder if there is an element of disassociation when it comes to ignoring the negative aspects of her job, because they outweigh the thrill and the positives.

If The Traitor and/or this series in general gets developed I hope they get the casting right. Whoever embodies Emma will have to be the same follow your instinct, tough cookie with the ability to adjust to the need of the moment, and the operative who never hesitates to do whatever necessary to achieve her goal. 

This is the kind of series with the potential to go a long way, and it's refreshing to have a spy thriller series with a female main character. All Emma needs now is to be pulling those strings herself.

Review

Reading this made me realise I have to dust off my copy of True Crime Story and read it again, also that I wish I were in charge of a streaming service so I could buy books to develop into screen material, whilst also being aware that there probably isn't enough money in the world to do fair justice to the amount of cracking books there are. This is one of those reads that would be a spectacular on-screen experience - given the right eye for cast and detail.

Lynch is a pinball in a machine without a task or a purpose, just trailing around until the right moment or opportunity comes around. Bobbie enters his universe of lies, convenience and the world of con. It appears at the time, as if two troubled souls in need of support and driven by trauma, need something from each other. Essentially this is what leads Lynch into his next falsity - he becomes the long lost brother of Bobbie.

The more he gets involved the more Lynch appears determined to find out what happened to Heydon, the man he shares a face with. A simple con turns into something closer to - the deeper the secrets the more destructive they are - with a side dish of criminal intent and a smidgen of gangster style justice.

It's riveting piece of fiction, with the kind of ending that makes me hope we see Lynch again in some capacity. The charming con-man with an unhealthy lack of any sense of danger, who is so quick on his feet that the reader can't help but want him to succeed, perhaps because of the sheer audacity at times. It's a great read and I highly recommend it.

Review

I think what the author does really well in this book, is describing the voice and imagery of the fire. I'm not sure people realise the level of destruction wildfires can cause. It's more than just a fire burning with such fierce intensity that it devours everything and anybody in its path. It's the miniscule details that help give the situation and the reader a 'right there in the moment' feeling. The tension, the fear, the heat - it's all part of the web around the core.

The core being the crime Kennard is trying to solve, and within that is a complex inner emotional product that he carries around with him. Blame and guilt live rent-free in his head, which is why he is unable to let go of a subconscious need to save and succeed. The save part is especially relevant. He couldn't save the boy, so he has to find the killer.

As I mentioned above, I think the strength of the story is the way the reader is drawn into the moment with such a visceral connection that at times you struggle to breathe in a room full of smoke. Interestingly it almost invites you along to disagree with decision making, especially when Kennard places lives before safety, solving the case before putting many others at risk. It is part and parcel of his inner turmoil.

I enjoyed the read a lot and wouldn't hesitate to read more and to recommend to other readers of course.

October 1944, in the so-called  Republic of Salò, the last fascist stronghold in Italy. After months of ferocious fighting on the Gothic Line, Colonel Martin Bora of the Wehrmacht must investigate the theft of a precious painting of Venus by Titian, stolen with uncanny ease from a local residence.  

While Bora’s inquiry proceeds among many difficulties, the discovery of three dead bodies throws an even more sinister light on the scene. The victims are female, very beautiful, apparently dead by their own hand but in fact elegantly murdered.  

Review

I realised a few pages in that I have missed Martin Bora and Pastor. The figurehead of this series has grown into an entire microcosm, which is sustained by the structure of the war he is surrounded by and the constant fight for survival. In a setting that begets suspicion, threats, violence and a lack of trust, is it any wonder that enemy and friend are often one and the same thing.

In combination with the 'acquisition' of fine art by the Nazi regime, the net closing around Bora is getting more difficult to avoid, which makes for a multi-faceted read. It highlights the many levels of hypocrisy, especially when it comes to treating men who fought valiantly for people and country like untrustworthy comrades, merely because of their vicinity to any anti-agenda people or actions.

Equally the theft of priceless art during the occupation and run of power of the Nazi's, and the fierce determination of Conforti to ensure there would be a trace left of the perfect war crime. All of this is folded neatly into a Matryoshka doll of crime within a crime, whilst the Matryoshka represents the crime of the fascist regime itself.

I have to admit I was ready to write an - oh, no how could you - rant. The last few pages had me holding my breath there, don't do it there must be more Bora! As always, a fantastic read, Pastor never disappoints.

The Comandante has a way of asserting his competence without really doing anything other than having a specific presence when he is around people. If that is not enough then a reminder of his career credentials seems to put people in their place. I think Daniel has taken on a wee bit of that reputation.

The above can be enough of an explanation for their new case, a rather unusual way to to hire investigators though, and certainly a way to ensure the potential suspects are already wary of your motives.

As Daniel navigates a powerful, very competitive field of sport, which is a very lucrative business, ergo one that may compel certain individuals to commit crimes, he learns that perhaps a grieving father had good reason to suspect the narrative of his son falling foul of his own incompetence.

In direct comparison to this we have Daniel struggling with his own family complications and similar reckless attitudes, whilst gives the story an element of relatability, both in regards to the case and life in general. It's what makes the series so appealing.

I think this series is steadily evolving and improving - it has Dibdin vibes - where surroundings, culture and strong, memorable characters create the kind of read you remember. More importantly it is the perfect recipe for a good read.

Review

Both sides of the coin of justice play a role in this story. The disparity created by a lack of support for accused who are unable to communicate in the language of their chosen country, the way the press and prejudice create a specific frame of reference that has undue influence over the opinions and thereby also possibly court, judge and jury.

On the other side there is pesky legislation (depending on court and country) that often comes into play about the use of prior information that could also influence one way or the way. In this particular scenario Eva keeps pertinent information from the authorities, which could determine a different outcome for Zina, although I'm certain it is the attempt to save the woman.

She sees parallels between her own experiences and the way her mother was treated as an non-English speaking person from a foreign country. It's at the core of her interactions with Zina, despite I think knowing what the truth is - deep down she knows she is capable, but the lack of fairness and inequality towards this woman override everything else.

I really enjoyed the way the author shed a light on the way recognising systemic bias can influence the most important institutions, regardless of guilt or innocence - all deserve an equal chance in court.

It's a captivating read, a tale with a factual story at the core. The unpicking of Zina and Eva, the scrutiny of life as an immigrant and way we interact with others, especially when others look and sound different. It's a fantastic book I hope to read more by this author.
