#BlogBlitz Spider Games by K.J. McGillick

Today it's my turn on the BlogTour Spider Games, the first A Conspiracy of Betrayal series, by K. J. McGillick.
About the Author

As she evolved so did her career choices. After completing her graduate degree in nursing, she spent many years in the university setting sharing the dreams of the enthusiastic nursing students she taught. After twenty rewarding years in the medical field she attended law school and has spent the last twenty-four years as an attorney helping people navigate the turbulent waters of the legal system. Not an easy feat. And now? Now she is sharing the characters she loves with readers hoping they are intrigued by her twisting and turning plots and entertained by her writing.

About the book
How do you kill a spider?

Kate O’Brien is pure dedication; she believes in the justice system. This feisty, no-nonsense attorney works herself to the bone every day, tirelessly building her reputation and career. She is on the path to being a legal star. That is until her corrupt law partner, Bill Brown, a criminal defense attorney, achieves a degree of notoriety which attracts the interest of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

When the inconceivable happens, Bill is arrested, charged with multiple counts of drug trafficking and money laundering leaving the law firm in chaos. As Kate slowly digs her way out, what she finds sends her down a dark path that could lead to her imprisonment or death. Bill has meticulously set her up to pay for his malevolent crimes. His cohorts, fearing she knows too much, have marked her for death. Can she stay ahead of the FBI and unravel crimes that reach as far as China and Russia? Or will she need to assume a new identity to save her own life?

A fast-paced thriller that keeps you guessing until the end. Suspenseful crime fiction with twists and turns throughout this masterfully plotted novel keeps you on the edge of your seat. It may be read as a standalone and serves as the first book in the series, A Conspiracy of Betrayal.

Review
It might only take you a few pages or chapters, but I can nearly guarantee you will at some point either feel sorry for Kate O'Brien or think she is way out of her depth. She starts the story off on the wrong foot and never really manages to get on the right one.

It is just one hit after the other. At first she is blindsided by what she perceives to be accidents, miscommunications, a partner too lazy to fill her in on details, but eventually even she twigs to the fact that somehow something is wrong in the state of Denmark.

Then the question becomes - is she an innocent bystander or a convenient patsy? What starts out as stepping in for another lawyer, as the drunken and violent wife of a reputable member of society is arrested for murder, quickly spirals into something that stinks worse than a sardine sandwich locked in a car during a heatwave.

It's a legal, police procedural and has a modern urban crime fiction vibe. It has a certain snark to it, is fast-paced and it's fair to say you never know what's behind the next door. The main character is this interesting combination of sassy lawyer - someone who has no clue what's going on or what she is doing, and the pivotal figure in a - no, wait she still doesn't know.

This is the first book in A Conspiracy of Betrayal series. This is my fourth book by McGillick and in my opinion the best I have read by this particular author so far.

About the book
A stolen life. A Faustian bargain. Prey becomes predator.

Azar Abed is out for revenge for the life Dr. Adrian Armond stole from her. No matter what the cost. Adrien Armond will stop at nothing to recover the massive fortune Azar Abed embezzled from him. Neither will walk away until the other is dead. Someone’s going to die, that is for certain.

Personal revenge gets caught up in a bio-terror plot to crash the world’s economy as darkness spirals into darkness and terror is the order of the day. Azar Abed and Adrien Armond are on a collision course that could have catastrophic consequences on a global scale.

Who will kill who first? Will it be enough? Can anyone stop the bio-terror plot to destroy the world’s economy that is already in motion? Does anyone have enough humanity left even to try?

Set against a backdrop of Washington, DC, ONE is a heart pounding-psychological thriller pitting greed against greed in a cat-and-mouse game where vengeance is the only prize. It can be read as a standalone, or as the conclusion to events begun in its predecessor, TWO. It concludes the Path of Deception and Betrayal series.

Review
This book brings the Path of Deception and Betrayal series to a conclusion. Each book can be read as a standalone novel.

This one reverts back to the more charming, playful and amusing atmosphere, and dialogue, of Three, whereas Two is brutal and vicious. One brings previous plots and characters together to culminate in a cleverly constructed crescendo.

Azar is plotting the downfall of Armond, who quite frankly deserves some kind of punishment at this point. He always seems to slither past any retribution or legal intervention with the ease of a snake in thick foliage.

Simultaneously Azar and Armond are intent on destroying each other, but are less interested in the ramifications for anyone else. An insidious plot to take down the economy on a global scale and throw the world into chaos, thereby causing mass destruction - is the result of ambitious planning. The kind that can only be born of a mind seething with anger.

The wild card in this setting is Mary, the private eye with plenty of smarts and information, who is always underestimated because she is probably the least likely to be thought any kind of threat. That's a grave mistake to make of course.

It's a crime thriller with ruthless criminals, who begin to eat their own tails.

McKillick has created an interesting trilogy in a sense that although the books are connected by plot and characters, they are also individual experiences from a reading perspective. The fact each one has different type of style and approach definitely speaks to that.

Review
This is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone novel. It starts or intersects just before the  end of the events of the last book.

I think it's fair to say that this read is much darker than the previous one. It's brutal, violent and less forgiving. McGillick brings out the nasty hardcore criminal, as opposed to perhaps the more charming one of the last story.

To the outside world, and his wife Isabella, Adrien is a successful Cardio-thoracic surgeon. He is also arrogant and controlling, perhaps this comes with the god-like status awarded to him due to his career choice. Behind the golden mask lurks the persona of a greedy sociopath.

The truth is that his greed and connections have made him want more, which in turn means having to put the lives of others at risk. Being involved in black market organ trafficking makes him scum of the earth and also incredibly ruthless. A man willing to sacrifice his wife to get what he wants.

Isabella eventually has to make a choice. Does she let herself be steamrollered by her husband or does she stand up to him, even if it's not directly done in his presence, and force him to acknowledge that she refuses to be treated like some rubbish he wants to discard.

It's a dark thriller with a vicious modern crime vibe. McGillick combines domestic fear and control with crimes of our era to create a brutal and relentless read.

About the book
Inviting a stranger into your home can be dangerous. Inviting a stranger into your life can turn deadly.

How would you feel if you discovered your death was meticulously planned by someone you loved? You didn't know how or when or even why. All you could do was wait. Emma has it all-a job she loves and a man who professed to love her. Or did she? How could she be so blind?

When her lover’s car is found burned and abandoned in another state, the police come asking some hard questions. What she discovers upends her world completely. Jude had been living a double life right under her nose. A deceitful life, a treacherous life. Who was this man that had already groomed another woman to take over Emma's life? A woman who was Emma's body double and now dead.

Why had she so easily trusted this psychopath with her heart? Betrayed on every level, consequences not of Emma’s making were nipping at her heels. Tick. Tock.

THREE is a gripping crime thriller that will have you hooked. A fast-paced psychological thriller that has been compared to the works of Dan Brown. It can be read as a standalone and serves as the first book in the Path of Deception and Betrayal series.

Review
Aunt Mary absolutely steals the show in this story. On meds or off meds she is always a hoot. You just never know what's going to come out of her mouth next. When she isn't on high alert and on the look out for Russians and spies, she is actively engaged in sourcing the right man for Emma.

The day starts out with some confusion about Emma owning a safety box she has no knowledge about. Her domestic partner is missing, her career has taken a turn for the worst and for some reason she has become a person of interest to law enforcement.

The amount of strange events seems to be in direct correlation to Jude's disappearance, but that has to be some kind of coincidence, right? Surely there is no way the man who loves her so deeply can't be involved. Hmm then again, when Emma thinks about it perhaps things haven't been so hunky-dory between them lately.

It's quite interesting how Eloise and Mary draw all the attention and give the reader the best moments in the book, as opposed to the main character Emma, who sometimes seems to be completely lost in the chaos of her life.

The romantic element of the story was a bit bada bing bada boom at the end with little bada in the middle, again Emma floats along whilst others swim.

It's a crime and mystery thriller, emerging readers into the world of modern crimes. A story of betrayal, deceit and a relationship built on a mountain of lies.

Everyone needs an Aunt Mary, especially if you inadvertently end up in the middle of a global scam with possible terrorist links. This is the first book in the A Path of Deception and Betrayal series, which hopefully means we will soon be hearing from Emma and Aunt Mary again very soon.
