About the book

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defence attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilised – her life is just as unremarkable as she'd always hoped it would be. But Leigh's ordinary life masks a childhood which was far from average … a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Then a case lands on her desk – defending a wealthy man accused of rape. It's the highest profile case she's ever been given – a case which could transform her career, if she wins. But when she meets the accused, she realises that it's no coincidence that he's chosen her as his attorney. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he knows what happened twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades running. And time is running out.

Review

Leigh is confronted with a face from the past, a face that brings back memories of a child who was disturbing and showed glimpses of the troubled man he would become. Now years later he wants, no he insists on her help to get him out of trouble. He isn't entirely innocent, but that is secondary right?

Slaughter really does like her conundrums and moral questions. Imagine being forced to defend a despicable monster, a rapist and general danger to society. At first Leigh thinks the case has just fallen into her lap until she realises who it is. It's someone who has the power to destroy her life, because he knows a secret she has been sat on for many years.

It's an uncomfortable read that takes readers into the deepest corners of reality, abuse and crime. Where innocence is stolen and never regained, and perhaps turns the victim into a slightly tarred image of their previous self. Does it mean that by involuntarily being part of the darkness they become part of it automatically.

It's one of those reads that takes you on a wild ride - you just never know where it's going to go next. From violence to betrayal, victimhood and a keen need for revenge, which is driven by shame, guilt and and scars of a childhood that never really heal. It's a typical Slaughter - an unforgettable read.
