Review
The victim isn't exactly a role model when it comes to best behaviour. He is a scoundrel, a small time crook and he likes to bag taken women just for the fun of it. His family is just as disreputable and have long been on the radar of the police. DCI Warren Jones isn't interested in how he led his life - he is just interested in getting justice for a murder victim.

Right from the start there seems to be something off about the witnesses and scene of the crime. Warren can't quite put his finger on it, but he intends to dig until he uncovers whatever the truth may be.

It's a police procedural crime read driven by a determined main character.

I liked the way Gitsham makes one thing in particular very clear when it comes to the victim, their past and the way they lived their life is inconsequential when it comes to solving the crime and bringing the perpetrator to justice. This is very much part of Warren Jones, the way he feels about his duty of care as a police officer, and that drive really fuels the read. As does his very dry humour and the way he knows exactly how to use his best resource - his team.

Overall it's a read that has a mystery vibe to it and simultaneously it's a modern crime read. I think the nature of the crime itself was a smart choice, because it very much reflects the victims and criminals of our era.
